Marco Odermatt and Loïc Meillard - rivals on the slopes, friends off them. For the documentary Bending Gates, the two were followed exclusively for 6 months on their peregrinations around the globe. The premiere took place yesterday at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, in the company of the athletes. All 8 episodes are now available on Red Bull TV.
Similar, but so different - that's perhaps the easiest way to describe skiers Marco Odermatt and Loïc Meillard: Marco with his tendency to take the low road, and Loïc who swears by discipline. Both, however, have the same goal: to make constant progress and one day win the famous globe in the overall World Cup standings.
Two athletes - eight episodes
For 6 months, Red Bull and producer Amelie Stiefvatter spent time with the two Swiss team-mates, sharing exclusive insights into the world of skiing. What does it take to become a professional skier, and how do you prepare for a race, both physically and mentally? Everyone needs an environment and a place to disconnect and recharge their batteries. Because it's true that, as professional athletes, Marco Odermatt and Loïc Meillard find themselves constantly under the media spotlight, and they have to find time to fulfill their responsibilities to their sponsors and partners - quite a challenge, but a daily one nonetheless for the two young athletes.
How do Marco and Loïc manage not to get too high after successes and lose heart after defeats, and how do they maintain their team spirit despite the competition between them? Trust and a good understanding with all the staff and team-mates are essential. But at the end of winter, there's always the question: what's in store for the next ski season? And how will they develop?
